Around a thousand people came, some parking up to a mile away, to remember and reflect. The keynote speaker today was Senator Ron Johnson, who called us to continue to work for freedom.

Lisbon Town Chairman Matt Gehrke and the rest of the organizers of the Dedication are to be commended for the moving tribute they put together.

The bill will also prevent local governments in Wisconsin from providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants and prevent the opportunity for illegal immigrants to obtain taxpayer funded benefits for which they are not entitled.

“This is an action that should have begun long ago when the federal government and the current administration stopped efforts to secure our borders. Now that the illegal drug trade and human trafficking have put the lives and property of those along our borders in peril, we must do all we can to dissuade the criminal element from looking at Wisconsin as a safe haven,” Pridemore said. “The ‘status quo’ is unacceptable in terms of the costs of law enforcement, crime, taxes, and social benefits, along with a host of other social problems tied to the issue. To simply do nothing would sentence another generation of families to a life of hiding in car trunks, continuously looking over their shoulder and continuing to be slaves of their work environment,” Pridemore continued.

“However,” Pridemore added, “we will take strong measures to ensure that the bill does not promote racial profiling.” Under the new bill, a law enforcement officer may not consider a person’s race, color, or national origin when conducting an investigation. Nor will local law enforcement be allowed to determine a person’s immigration status. Reasonable suspicion of breaking this law can only begin after the 48 hour period of not providing identification has passed.

An individual who has first broken the law, and then fails to prove his or her lawful presence in the U.S., may be held for up to 48 hours. During that time the person will be allowed to obtain appropriate documentation. If the person cannot produce the required documents, the matter will be referred to federal immigration services.

LRB-1116 is NOT a copycat version of Arizona’s proposal, S1070. If you lay both bills side by side and actually compare them, several differences would be apparent. First of all, LRB-1116 is only 6 pages long compared to the 43 pages of S1070. In addition, police agencies can NOT assume reasonable suspicion just because someone may be walking down the sidewalk and look like they may be here illegally. Employers are NOT affected by LRB-1116 and Federal statutes and penalties are NOT duplicated in state statues.

Opponents, and at least one is a lawyer, also assume that just because the most liberal court in the land has rendered a decision against Arizona’s law that the same ruling would apply to LRB-1116. The language that the 9th circuit court ruled on is not contained in LRB-1116. In fact, you must first commit a crime or civil violation and then refuse to offer any identification like a state issued ID card or driver’s license within 48 hours BEFORE you can be considered under “reasonable suspicion”.

The opponents of LRB-1116 are trying to appeal to the emotions of those in the liberal Latino community by using these scare tactics. Rather then debate me on the merits or invite me to meet with any of their groups they have chosen to take shots at it from a distance. They want to play politics and all I want to do is discourage the criminal element that is leaving Arizona from coming to Wisconsin. Adding Wisconsin to the growing list of states concerned that the federal government is not enforcing its own immigration laws would be a laudable goal. Since the federal government has stopped building the border fence that was designed to stop human trafficking and the drug trade from crossing over, we must enact laws like LRB-1116 to insure our own safety and security.
